St Mary's Calne is a leading UK Independent Boarding and Day School for Girls aged 11-18. Our vision is to be an exceptional girls' boarding school, offering the highest quality teaching and learning, pastoral care and a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities.

What the school is known for? At St Mary's, there are six houses, and the girls live within their own age group in a horizontal boarding system; they move houses every year (apart from two years in the Lower School House) but stay within their year group.

Critical Thinking is taught in both the Fourth Form and in the Sixth Form and builds on the skills developed in all subjects, where girls are encouraged to challenge assumptions, argue their case and weigh evidence before making judgements.
IT skills are seen as an essential component of the 'toolkit' with which pupils leave us and are taught both in a timetabled lesson in each year group as well as in the context of specific subjects. Girls are taught research, coursework and study skills and are prepared for the rigour of public examinations.

An increasing number are enjoying exciting Gap Years, having successfully deferred their university to start in Autumn 2024, and are currently making a foray into workplaces as diverse as Sotheby's and Prep Schools. The most popular destinations Calne girls are headed to this year reach opposite ends of the UK, with the top three being Edinburgh, Durham and Exeter.
As ever, there was great variety in the courses they have chosen to read, credit to the unique talents and interests they bring to their current and prospective communities. All of the major subject are represented, from languages, humanities, social sciences, STEM and the creative arts, with some new and exciting course titles creeping in as academic fields, such as Ecological and Environmental Sciences.
Highly competitive courses were also well represented, with places secured to read Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry and Architecture as well as at Oxford University.

Boarding at our school At St Mary's, there are seven houses, and the girls live within their own age group in a horizontal boarding system; they move houses every year in the Fourth Forms but stay within their year group. This offers the maximum opportunity to establish firm friendships and fellowship across the year group which will last throughout school and beyond.
Girls are therefore cared for by Housemistresses who are particularly aware of the needs of the individual age group in which they work. Junior Boarding The younger girls sleep in medium sized dormitories in School House, St Prisca's and St Cecilia's.
A genuine home away from home
Florence Dyas House (Girls) Florence Dyas House is one of the two Houses for our Sixth Form, and girls will say in this House for the whole two years of their A Levels. Florence Dyas House was opened in 2014 and is geared to preparing our Sixth Form girls for university life and is providing the girls with individual study bedrooms with ensuite facilities, social areas and study and tutorial areas.
Helen Wright House (Girls) Helen Wright House is one of the two Houses for our Sixth Form, and girls will say in this House for the whole two years of their A Levels. The Helen Wright House was opened in 2008 and is geared to preparing our Sixth Form girls for university life and is an exciting and wonderful end to their time at St Mary's.
