Aysgarth School is part of the Rugby School Group. A coeducational boarding prep school, with 85% of prep pupils in Year 7 and Year 8 full boarding. We offer Saturday lessons and 5 activities every Sunday. Annually, Aysgarth sends pupils to over 20 notable senior schools, and in September 2024, over 50% of Year 8 leavers began at their new schools with a scholarship.
Valuing respect, endeavour, and courage, Aysgarth prioritises happiness, well-being, and traditional values while empowering pupils to be independent, confident, and creative. We now also offer a dedicated Boarding Pathway to Rugby School. Escorted trains to and from London every exeat and half term.
Escorted unaccompanied minor service to all northern airports and, on request, to Edinburgh and York train stations.
60% of the 2024 leavers were awarded scholaships to top senior schools. 75% of the children play at least one musical instrument. Award-winning pastoral care. We have an international community of less than 10% and have a full submersion policy.
School history The school was originally founded by Rev. Clement Thomas Hales in the village of Aysgarth. This original site proved too small and the new building at Newton-le-Willows was opened in 1890 as a model of its kind. It houses a beautiful arts and craft chapel (now a listed building), an indoor swimming pool and electricity (quite unusual for that time).

Academics at Aysgarth
What pupils study at Aysgarth — and where it takes them.
Although the content is tailored towards the particular requirements of each individual and the senior school scholarship journey, these tests - both written and interview - have much in common with each other, all demanding: a standard well above that expected in the National Curriculum a level of challenge designed to stretch the most academic candidates the ability to apply higher order thinking skills including analysis, hypothesis and synthesis a genuine curiosity and love of learning In order to achieve the above students develop a love of learning from an early age and are encouraged to hone their own study skills to become the most efficient learners.
Knowledge of self provides the basis for critical thinking as well as taking a meta-cognitive approach to their own learning. By virtue of small classes (average 12 children in a class) and the relatively small number of academic scholars, they benefit from an individually tailored programme to nurture their natural ability and scholarship exam preparation.

Aysgarth School is a northern school with a national focus. We are proud of our success rate of getting our pupils to their school of choice, often on a Scholarship.
Each year, up to 50% of our pupils earn scholarships to leading senior schools, and 2025 is no exception. We celebrate Sebastian's academic and musical achievements at Fettes, George's dual awards at Sedbergh, Sonny's Sports Scholarship to Radley, Eddy's prestigious Michael Palin All-Rounder Scholarship at Shrewsbury, Jake's Sports Exhibition to Oundle, and Alistair's exceptional double scholarships in Drama and Sport at Barnard Castle.

The majority of pupils are full boarders. We aim to ensure that they can gain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from boarding. Evening and weekend programmes provide plentiful opportunities to pursue an enormous variety of activities, to relax and enjoy time with friends, and to catch up on work.
+2 photos Pastoral care and staffing The House Parents/Housemasters fundamental aim is to enable each pupil to achieve his full potential in all aspects of School life within a safe and harmonious setting; they are assisted in this by a dedicated team of form tutors and pastoral staff.
A genuine home away from home
85 - 90% of of our pupils board to some extent with nearly 60% being full boarders. Our boarding house is the heart of the school. Purpose built in the late 1800s the boarding rooms are above the dining room, classrooms and library. Built over three floors, sandwiched between the Headmaster's House, the Head of Boarding, a residental matron and a nurse.
Dorms range in size from sleeping 3 to sleeping 8 and are changed every term. Every bed has a hypnos mattress but the best guarentee of a good night sleep is a full and busy day! We are happy to accept short-stay applications for entry into Years 4, 5 and 6. At Aysgarth all pupils must commit to full boarding or day pupils in Year 7 & 8 so we request that any international pupils joining in Year 7 or 8 commit to full boarding for a full year with their peers.
