Lime House School was founded in 1899 and moved to its present location in Dalston (near Carlisle) in 1946. The school is a fully independent co-educational boarding and day school providing an affordable and quality education for pupils aged seven to eighteen.
Recognised as efficient by the Department for Education since 1930. The Headteacher is Mr Smith who joined the school in September 2024. Set in a rural environment where each child's talents and potential are carefully nurtured, our curriculum encourages academic achievement alongside pupils' sporting, cultural and personal development.
Our aim is simply to ensure that each pupil achieves his or her potential both academically and socially, each child being treated individually.

Academics at Lime House
What pupils study at Lime House — and where it takes them.
provides the opportunity for pupils to acquire skills in speaking and listening, literacy and numeracy. These are further developed in their other subjects. Pupils are taught 30 periods per week (1 hour periods). All pupils study a core curriculum of Mathematics, English and Science until the end of Key Stage 4 (16 years of age), and there is also the opportunity for them to build around that a combination of other optional subjects.
Pupil choices are taken into account in Years 10 & 11 and in the Sixth Form. The School aims to run any course in which there is sufficient demand. Years 7, 8 & 9 All pupils receive a broad introductory curriculum which gives them experience in all of the aspects outlined above.

The majority of the pupils are full boarders although a small number do return home for the weekend. All boys are housed on the Main School site in a large, spacious house built in 1638. There are several floors of dormitories and common rooms.
The boys occupy the main building in Rothley, Hawksdale, Lonsdale, Seathwaite and Salkeld boarding areas. All girls live in 'The Cottage'- adjacent to the main building and Borrowdale that was built in 2018. All dormitories have been renovated and redecorated within the last three years.

It is an independent co-educational Boarding and Day School, which sets out to admit pupils who are likely to benefit from the all round education which it provides.
The school accepts boys and girls of all denominations and faiths, offering education to children from the age of seven to eighteen. Entrance is based upon previous and present school reports and if possible an interview. There is no entrance examination.
