Pocklington is an inclusive, family focused and academic day and boarding school that offers incredible experiences inside and outside the classroom for children aged 2-18 years. From Prep School, which nurtures children's natural curiosity, imagination and enthusiasm for learning, to the Sixth Form, where independent thought is prized, our pupils are encouraged to be resilient, resourceful learners.
Numerous co-curricular activities take every day and evening, and each pupil is encouraged to pursue their own interests to help develop the depth of character and self-awareness to tackle life's challenges on their own terms. Our sense of community, care for each other and pride in the school is tangible, and particularly evident in our outstanding boarding provision.

Academics at Pocklington
What pupils study at Pocklington — and where it takes them.
During the first and second year (year 7 and 8), teaching is in mixed-ability forms. Initial placement into sets or bands is based on entrance examination results and on the school report. Any subsequent changes are based on internal examination results and on general progress.
Parents are contacted prior to proposed changes. Class size is usually not more than 20. As they progress to GCSEs (years 9-11) and A levels (years 12&13), pupils are guided through a process to select subjects that best fit individual interests and aptitudes.

Where our leavers go
Our students have a broad range of interests and skills and this is reflected in the diversity of their routes post A Level. The majority of our leavers (around 90%) go to university after A-Levels and a proportion of these take a Gap Year first.
Just under a half of these go to Russell Group universities, which includes Oxford and Cambridge. Our students go on to study a wide range of subjects with Engineering, Business Management, History, Science and Medicine among the most popular options.
Although the largest proportion of students will go to UK universities, we usually have a small number that opt to study abroad. Some of our artistic leavers choose to take the one year Foundation Diploma in Art and Design to boost their creative portfolios in preparationfor applications to Art and Design degrees.

Pocklington is a small, safe, rural market town just 12 miles from the historic city of York, in the North East of England. York is just 2 hours by train from London, with regular (hourly) services running. Flights can ideally arrive at London, Manchester or Leeds.
Pocklington School is 500 years old, celebrating its quincentenary in 2014. Nevertheless it is a modern and ambitious school. The school prides itself on outstanding pastoral care (graded as excellent by the ISI Inspection of October 2021), and high academic standards to GCSE and A-level.
A genuine home away from home
At Pocklington we are justifiably proud of the friendly and supportive atmosphere in our boarding community. We are also proud of the quality of our boarding houses, which provide some of the best boarding accommodation in the UK. Pupils have access to excellent facilities for study and relaxation, in a home from home atmosphere.
Our boarding houses are located on, or adjacent to, our beautiful school campus, and the school itself is an integral part of the Yorkshire market town of Pocklington. The historic city of York is a short journey away and there is easy access from the school to several international airports.

are guidelines only and all our decisions on entry are at the discretion of the Head and Deputy head Academic. We welcome younger overseas pupils - from Year 6 Prep School age - and we are mindful that these younger children acquire at a very rapid rate.
We therefore have less prescriptive expectations of but will still assess applicants in maths, reading and NVR. Requirements for interviews As well as assessing international applicants in maths and written English, we will also expect them to have a face to face spoken interview in English.
