Hazlegrove Preparatory — school buildings and grounds

Amidst our glorious 200 acres of grounds, we are blessed with many wonderful facilities such as our state-of the art Teaching and Learning centre, sports hall, indoor swimming pool, art and DT facilities, and theatre. These undoubtedly help put Hazlegrove into the leading category of schools in the UK.

We are a day and boarding school in which a family ethos is at its very core. We pride ourselves in our outstanding pastoral care, applying a proactive rather than reactive approach, in which every member of staff, whatever their role, is involved.

Children leave Hazlegrove prepared for the next stage of their education, and set on their path to top senior schools and eventually the university of their choice.

Learning goes well beyond the classroom. We provide as many opportunities and experiences for each child, so that they can discover their own unique skills and talents and develop into curious and passionate learners. We believe that every child is a human being with immeasurable potential, and it is our goal at Hazlegrove to find and nurture that potential.

We want to ensure that they have the social, emotional and academic foundations to go on to thrive at senior school and beyond. Ultimately, we want our children to become kind, confident and self-assured young people, in the backdrop of this unique, nurturing and inspirational school.

We are passionate about developing in the children, genuine awe, wonder and curiosity at the complexities of life and the world about us - past, present and future. The breadth and balance in the curriculum give pupils an opportunity to get excited about the lessons they have each day and from Year 4, pupils join the rest of the Prep School in attending school on Saturday mornings.

Where our leavers go

Hazlegrove pupils move on to a wide variety of senior schools aged 13, having taken Common Entrance or Scholarship examinations. There is a wealth of knowledge available at Hazlegrove about entry to Senior School.

Each year pupils go to many different senior schools around the UK. Parents can talk with the Headmaster and other staff for advice at any time.

The process ensures that the School gets to know the family and their desires and ambitions for their children, both academically and pastorally. We look carefully at the child in terms of their abilities, strengths and interests.

The options for the family are then narrowed down depending on whether they are looking at boarding/day, single-sex/co-ed, selective/ non-selective and so on. We prepare all children for their Senior School pre-tests at Hazlegrove and give every child interview practice too for both Senior School entry and scholarship.

We also have a well-developed scholarship programme for any child applying for any award to a Senior School. The Headmaster and other staff are always happy to discuss the different options available for the children in the years leading up to Scholarship or Common Entrance.

Scholarships to Senior Schools Whilst we recognise that success for any child is relative to their own abilities, expectations and aspirations, we do, at times, have the opportunity to the performance and achievements of Hazlegrove pupils through competitive examinations at 13+. Over the last four years, 114 Scholarships and Awards were gained to 20 different schools, comprising;25 Academic 44 Sports 8 Music 9 All-Rounder 9 Art / DT 19 Drama Scholarships Schools that the Hazlegrove children have moved on to in recent years include: Bryanston, Canford, Cheltenham Ladies College, Dean Close, Downside, Eton College, King's College Taunton, King's Bruton, Leweston, Marlborough, Millfield, Pangbourne College, Roedean, Sherborne Girls, Sherborne, St Mary's Ascot, St Mary's Calne, Taunton, Tudor Hall, Wellington School, Wells Cathedral and Winchester.
